BRIEF HISTORY OF OUR LADY OF APOSTLES PRIVATE SCHOOL, YABA
The history of the established of OLAPS can be traced to the vision of Rev. Sr. ScholasticaMcAndrew who set it up in 1950 here in its present site. The site previously hosted the catholic Mission for St .Agnes Teacher Training School founded in 1933 but later relocated to its present and permanent site at Maryland, Lagos in 1949.
The first African teacher to be employed was Helen Awani in 1950. His Grace Archbishop Aggey Visited the school for the first time in April 12th, 1967 accomplished by Fr. McGuiness. In 1968, 14 pupils received the sacrament of confirmation at St Dominic’s Catholic Church from the hands of His Lordship Bishop Dempsey and the popular BenBruce of the Silverbird now Senator was one of them.
OLAPS pupils were part the team that welcomed the Ethiopian Emperor Haile Sellessile on his first visit to Nigeria in 1972.
In the same year, OLAPS pupils joined hands and welcomed the Senegalese President, Dr, Leopold SedarSeghor at the international airport, Lagos.
In the 1973 the entourage that welcomed the president of the council of Hungarian People’s Republic has OLAPS pupils in attendance. On March 1, 1985, OLAPS first Inter-House Sports was held at Unilag Sports ground.
On June 29th, 1985, OLAPS went on Environmental Sanitation campaign at Little Road, Yaba.
In 1987, a new set of classrooms was built and blessed by the then Archbishop of Lagos, His Eminence Anthony Cardinal Okojie now Archbishop Emeritus.
In 2000, OLAPS celebrated her Golden Jubilee. As part of that celebration, another structure, the school hall was blessed by Archbishop Anthony Cardinal Okojie on June 10th, 2000.
For the past seventy-one(71) years, OLAPS has blossomed and will continue to flourish as it is stepping stone for some of our country’s great and reputable men and women of valour in likes of the former first lady of Nigeria, Late Mrs Stella Obasanjo of blessed memory, The Bruce family that now has a Senator of Ben Bruce etc.
OLAPS stands out I unequalled moral, academic and social excellence which has jealously guarded and maintained even in the face of frequent storms in the Nigerian Educational system.
Keeping to its motto: “Work and Pray”, OLAPS has not lagged in its spiritual development, discipline and social upbringing of its pupils to the envy of its patronizing parents and society.
OLAPS is an institution owned by the Catholic Church in Nigeria, domiciled in Lagos and managed/supervised by Our Lady of Apostles Sisters.
